Porthminster Beach, St Ives
With everything else Primrose Valley and St Ives have going for them, the fact we're steps away from one of Cornwall's loveliest beaches is easily forgotten. And if Cornwall and beach conjure only images of spades, sandy feet and sore pink shins, we'd urge you to think again.
For a start, this is not a standard-issue beach, its Blue Flag recognises the cleanliness of both its sand and water. And, beyond the obvious and swimming, the beach at any time of year is not some picture-postcard set-piece, but a vibrant, daily-changing playground for children and grown-ups alike.
Its sands may be golden and its waters frequently turquoise, but the beach is often best enjoyed when skies are low, fast-moving and purple, when the sea is grey-green and whipped by the wind into frothy peaks and sudden, sweeping hollows.
(And if you return feeling braced, wind-lashed and like you really deserve warmth and the first drink of the day, then so be it... )
